CHAPTER 11

The next morning, after they finished eating their continental breakfasts in the restaurant at the hotel, Ella and Luke moved into the bar area, where the bartender was getting ready for the day. He’d switched on the large TV screen in the seating area and turned on the local news channel to provide some background noise and visuals. That way, any hotel guests passing by who wanted the latest news or weather report for the day could enjoy a cup of coffee or beverage before heading out for the day.

Ella and Luke ordered two cups of coffee, and when the bartender saw who it was, he told Ella they were complimentary. “You’re working here, aren’t you? They’re on the house. Just shout if you want any refills,” the bartender said as he continued to cut up some limes and fruit.

Ella thanked him as she and Luke sat in front of the large TV screen and listened to the latest news report. A reporter was standing outside the local police station, and he was about to get a few words from a suspect who had just been released on bail after his arrest for the murder of his son’s newly wedded bride.

Luke shook his head in disgust. “I can’t believe he got out on bail so quickly,” he said. And then he added, “Actually, I’m surprised McMeekin had him arrested so quickly. Personally, I would have gotten a confession out of him first, or let him go while I gathered more convincing evidence. I think everything is circumstantial at the moment for everyone we’ve interviewed and talked to.”

“There are lots of suspects with reasonable motives and fairly good means of killing Deborah, but we just need that one convincing bit of evidence to get us a result, don’t we?” Ella asked.

“Yes, that sums it up nicely. Let’s see what Dave has to say,” Luke said, looking up at the large screen in the bar.

Dave had just stormed out of the police station with his attorney, and he was still fuming. His lawyer had prepared a quick statement about his client’s outstanding character in his local community back home and how the police should not have been pressured into making a mistake and going for an easy arrest. He went on to say that the mayor was up for reelection, and she shouldn’t push the local police for her own personal political gain.

Ella and Luke just listened to the lawyer, who seemed to love the limelight and making the most of his moment in front of the cameras. Then he allowed his client, Dave Bradley, to say a few words. The cameraman had a brilliant angle, where the police station signage was distinct in the background, which made the report seem like a swipe at the local police.

“It is a disgrace that I, as a tourist in this fine city, have been arrested for the murder of my new daughter-in-law, while the actual killer is still out there enjoying their freedom.
